This a short-term contract funded position through the Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ) Program. The CSJ Program creates employment opportunities for youth, therefore the successful applicant must be between the ages of 15 and 30 at the start of employment.
The Retail Action Network (RAN) is a non-profit that fights for workplace justice, increased wages, and improved conditions in the retail, restaurant, and hospitality industry. Since we launched in September of 2015, we have undertaken a wide range of campaigns that have changed legislation in BC and improved the lives of working people. We have worked with community partners to return thousands of dollars in stolen wages to workers through direct advocacy.
This is a legal advocacy position in RAN’s Solidarity Stewards Program that combines advocacy skills with creative worker outreach. The purpose of the Solidarity Stewards Program is to help workers take action to get workplace justice and empower workers to organize for change. Solidarity Stewards are RAN’s front-line support for non-unionized retail, restaurant and hospitality workers who contact RAN for help or with questions about their rights at work. In this position, you will be mentored to learn to provide support and advocacy to people facing workplace injustice. You will also play an important role carrying out outreach activities to help spread awareness about workers rights.
Due to COVID-19, this position requires remote work. An office desk is not available. A laptop can be provided. The ability to work online and communicate daily through email, zoom, and slack is necessary. In person, socially distanced meetings with your supervisor/mentor can be arranged, including access to masks, gloves and sanitizer. In-person outreach activities (postering, leafleting) are also expected of the position.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Learn how to help workers navigate their legal rights, point out the gaps in the law, and talk to workers about ways to organize for better working conditions
- Schedule intakes and call backs for workers who contact RAN
- Assist Solidarity Stewards and workers in writing employer demand letters, and calculating stolen wages to help workers recover wages
- Keep workers’ files updated and organized while following privacy laws concerning the protection of personal information
- Work with team members to develop outreach materials and carry out an outreach plan to spread community awareness about the Solidarity Stewards Program
- Assist in organizing online webinars to help non-unionized restaurant, retail and hospitality workers learn about/navigate pressing changes to their rights and employment protections (e.g. their rights during COVID-19)
- Participate in weekly team meetings over zoom
- Participate in staff organizer trainings (online)
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledgeable of, or eagerness to learn more about the BC Employment Standards and other laws in BC that set out workers legal rights
- Attentive listener with the ability to provide a respectful space for workers to feel comfortable and share their stories
- Committed to confidentiality in dealing with sensitive information
- Ability to work independently, setting and meeting your own deadlines, and working in a way that is self-directed/self-motivated
- Detail-oriented and excellent organizational, planning and time-management skills, including ability to prioritize and meet deadlines
- Strong collaboration skills and the ability to work harmoniously with a diverse group of people and organizations in the community
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills to respectfully engage with a number of workers from diverse backgrounds
- Flexibility to accommodate meetings, action days, campaigns and deadlines that may extend into the evenings and weekends
- Ability to speak multiple languages is an asset
- Must be between the ages of 15-30 (CSJ requirement)
- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada (hold permanent SIN)
- Current of previous experience working grocery stores, restaurants, hotels or retail is considered an asset
- Commitment to workplace justice
- Knowledge of how multiple forms of systemic oppression intersect to shape the experiences of people who work in retail, restaurants, or hospitality
- An understanding that RAN operates with a decolonizing framework that respects relationships with the original people and spirit of this territory, and reflects on how our work at RAN may be bound up with systems and processes of ongoing colonization
